In 2019 we partnered with an external environmental organisation to begin calculating and reducing our carbon footprint in the workplace. Our carbon footprint strategy has recently extended into an off-setting plan through reforestation with Bosquia, and we’d love to show you our journey so far.

Workplace carbon emissions and the planetary problem

Over the past century, it has been estimated that global CO2 emissions have risen from 2 billion tons (recorded in 1900) to a staggering 36.8bn tonnes. (by 2022 – International Energy Agency (IEA)).

Energy usage is a part of every company and household. CO2 emissions and energy consumption occur because of natural gas, electricity, heating, propane, servers, employee travel, and daily commuters. However, businesses and households can reduce their carbon footprint by taking simple, intentional actions. Using renewable energy sources, adjusting thermostats, making sure all plugs are turned off at the end of the day, using a laptop instead of a desktop computer, opting for hybrid vehicles, and recycling can all help.

Reducing our CO2 emissions and calculating our carbon footprint as a company

Our company has been actively working with a specialised partner program since 2019. Our partnership with Ambialia has helped us calculate and reduce our carbon footprint – setting us on a path to protect the environment, fight climate change, and help work towards the transition to a clean energy future.

As part of our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint, we have implemented the following initiatives:

The use of hybrid company cars
Using recycled paper
Shifting from quarterly to annually printed magazines
Reducing our office thermostat and using low energy eco-settings
Offering our clients the service of live video visits of properties so that they do not need to take a flight to Ibiza every time

In the latter part of 2020, we calculated our current carbon footprint. Prestige Properties Ibiza emits approximately 18 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Off-setting with Bosquia – reforestation, actions and environmental policy

As part of our carbon footprint strategy, we’ve started reforestation with Bosquia. Their social enterprise educates companies like ourselves and individuals about the importance of forests. It encourages us to make a difference by increasing our planet’s green space. By funding them, we can compensate for our carbon footprint expenditure and enable them to reforest or create new native forests on our company’s behalf.

As the most significant regulators and balancers of climate, forests favour rainfall, generate oxygen, clean the air, and serve as an essential part of our planet’s ecosystem.As a company, we were particularly drawn to Bosquia as our off-setting non-profit organisation for their passion for nature, human progress and dedication to protecting forests on the Spanish mainland.

2022 was the year for our ‘Going Green Debris Campaign’ at Prestige Properties Ibiza: Campaña Escombro

Our love for Ibiza knows no bounds. But, our love must exceed mere pleasure and enjoyment. Our commitment to the environment and love for the island has led to the rise of our GOING GREEN campaign, which we are very passionate about and strive to maintain.

Our role as a responsible company involves reducing our carbon footprint, participating in regular beach clean-ups, educating homeowners about energy efficiency, and supporting IbizaPreservation. In addition, it is a great honour and pleasure to announce that in 2022 we launched our brand-new initiative on the island – the first of its kind!

Our campaign, ‘Campaña Escombro’, has been developed in collaboration with Novaforma construction company to clean up illegal construction dumping on the island.

What is the ‘Campaña Escombro’ campaign?

Campaña Escombro aims to contribute to the solution of the problems caused by, the renovation of old properties, the influx of ongoing construction projects, and the explosion in tourism. We believe it was a logical step in the right direction for us to keep the illegal dumping of construction waste at bay and do our bit to try and preserve the island’s pristine natural beauty

Many of us have walked through the picturesque countryside only to be confronted with a pile of construction debris and rubbish waste materials. Together with Novaforma Constructions and Services Ibiza, we have introduced a process to clean-up some of these illegal dumping sites.

Anyone who sees one of these sites can report it to Prestige Properties Ibiza by contacting us with a photo and location pin. We will then work to remove the rubbish and separate it for proper disposal, with all costs covered and donated internally between the two companies.

To preserve Ibiza’s natural beauty, we encourage everyone, from our clients, collaborators, local businesses and island residents, to actively participate and join forces with us in "Going Green & Giving Back".

The scope of the problem: illegal dumping of construction materials in Ibiza

Unfortunately, the island has yet to have official statistics surrounding the illegal dumping of reconstruction waste materials. In addition, no action has been taken to prevent or clean up construction debris dumped in nature.

As well as being an eyesore, illegal dumping has severe impacts on wildlife and habitat. Chemicals and non-biodegradable materials contaminate groundwater and soil in the waste. It is also possible for domesticated animals and wildlife to die after consuming poisonous materials.

We need you to help us collect illegal dumping of construction waste in Ibiza.

Although it is still necessary to overcome bureaucratic obstacles (since we must move onto private land with permission), Prestige Properties Ibiza, alongside Novaforma, will collect construction waste from areas we are informed about by you, our fellow islanders.

Our first rubble heap was cleared near Cala Llenya in September. Along with Novaforma employees, we disposed of 9.5 tonnes of rubble. There is now a return to the natural state of the landscape, which is the most beautiful and rewarding experience.

People and families in Ibiza can benefit from social responsibility. Whether we donate to charitable causes, support environmental changes, or consider programs that help people from developing countries, our social responsibility as a community can make a difference in the lives, health, and environment of others.

Are you familiar with the De Angel history?

Luz and Ramon, the owners of De Angel, decided to move to Ibiza in 2011 together with their children, as they were tired of hectic city-life in Valencia. After a beautiful summer on the island and a family conversation about natural soaps, they decided to start their own company to develop soaps with natural ingredients inspired by the island. This was a new challenge for them because they had no experience in this, but they knew that together they would make a good team because Luz was always busy with handicrafts and Ramon had a background in graphic design.

During those winter months they discovered more of the beauty that Ibiza offers, and all the natural ingredients they could use for their recipes. With this inspiration they started experimenting with countless ingredients such as plants, vegetable oils etc. The results were beautiful products which they became more enthusiastic about every day, and which gave them the motivation to continue.

As Spring approached, they had created some wonderful products, with beautiful and handmade packaging. However, they did not have any customers since their products were not yet known among the islanders and tourists. To make sure their name grew, and their products were recognised, they started selling their products in the famous markets of Ibiza: Las Dalias, Sant Joan and Hippie Market Punta Arabí. Soon they received enthusiastic client responses about the quality of their products and to this day they continue to distribute them to the markets from their store in Port des Torrent, in the south of Ibiza.

Prestige Properties Ibiza Beach Clean-Up Initiative 2021

During a collaborative effort, over 200 kilos of garbage were collected in just one morning by a group of local residents from Ibiza.

As part of a project led by us at Prestige Properties Ibiza, nearly 50 individuals, between our office and a variety of volunteer associations, worked together to clean up the areas of Cas Mut and Talamanca Beach, Ibiza.

The initiative took place on Saturday 20^th of November in partnership with four of the island’s local NGOs and volunteer groups, Plastic Free Ibiza and Formentera, Ibiza Limpia (Casita Verde), Voluntaris d’Eivissa, and IbizaPreservation. Together we proudly managed to collect more than 200 kilos of rubbish that would otherwise be left polluting our environment, shorelines, and land.

During the project 23 people, Prestige Properties employees and volunteers, set out to collect roaming waste products and trash from the urban zone of Cas Mut, just outside Ibiza Town. The remainder of the group of volunteers and Prestige staff (30 people) gathered together on the beach of Talamanca with their friends, partners, and children who also took part in the morning’s activities.

As a result of the ‘Beach Clean Up’ initiative 160 kilos of glass, 120 kilos of plastics and cans, 15 kilos of paper, and approximately 50 kilos of non-recyclable waste were collected in total between the two locations. Cas Mut alone collected 170 kilos of rubbish (90 kg of which were plastic items or cans).

We specifically chose this date as it marked the start of the European Week for Waste Reduction 2021, whereby a wide variety of initiatives and campaigns across the island and Europe set out to raise awareness regarding reducing waste and living a more sustainable life.

Ibiza and Formentera are some of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations. In 2018, 3.1 million visitors were recorded, creating a tourist to resident ratio of 20/1 – the second-highest in the world, thus placing enormous pressure on our land, water, and ecosystems, as well as increasing the development of larger infrastructures, such as roads, urbanisations, desalination plants, and sewage treatment facilities.

To address these issues, IbizaPreservation supports projects to ensure the protection and sustainability of our island and our sister island Formentera.

About IbizaPreservation

For the past 10 years, IbizaPreservation has been actively working towards the protection and sustainability of our island’s, Ibiza and Formentera.

The foundation relies on the donations of the local community and from organizations around the world to continue to support environmental local initiatives.

Their main areas of focus surround the protection of rural and marine spaces by helping to conserve island landscapes, biodiversity, and water. IbizaPreservation believes the tourism-based economy can coexist harmoniously with our unique cultural and environmental heritage if we choose to evolve. IbizaPreservation supports this evolution by leading, funding, and enabling nature and biodiversity preservation projects on land and at sea.

IbizaPreservation’s Project: Plastic Free Ibiza and Formentera

Plastic Free Ibiza aims to phase out single-use plastics in Ibiza and Formentera by 2023.

Ibiza generates 36% more waste per person than the rest of Spain. Much of this is plastic. As more plastic ends up in the sea and on our beaches, it’s harming our marine environment and endangered species.

With 14 organisations, IbizaPreservation is collectively researching and finding solutions on how to replace, reduce, reuse and recycle plastic.

IbizaPreservation’s Project: Posidonia Protection

Posidonia seagrass forms underwater meadows critical to our marine ecosystem. They provide the main carbon sink in the Mediterranean, produce oxygen, purify the water, prevent coastal erosion, and are important breeding grounds for fisheries.

Ibiza and Formentera have Posidonia meadows more than 1000 years old which are recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage. Uncontrolled boat anchoring, pollution, and coastal construction have destroyed thousands of square meters of Posidonia, and more losses could have a serious impact on our ecosystem.

With Marine Experts, the IbizaPreservation is working towards protecting and keeping our Posidonia meadows and seas pristine, and full of life.

IbizaPreservation’s Project: Sustainability Observatory

For a thriving natural environment and long-term economic and social prosperity, IbizaPreservation is addressing issues relating to tourism, including land use, water, waste, energy, biodiversity, and transport.

To gain a better understanding of these issues, in 2018 IbizaPreservation created the Sustainability Observatory to track the evolution of socio-environmental issues in Ibiza from a data-driven, scientific perspective. The aim is to guide priorities and actions for the conservation of the island from a position of knowledge.

The Observatory’s studies have the backing of the Balearic regional government and the Consell of Ibiza and are seen as a crucial tool to help inform public debate and promote more sustainable solutions.

IbizaPreservation’s Project: Ibiza Produce

KM0 or "slow food" products benefit our health by maximising our nutrient intake; they benefit our planet by cutting down on harmful carbon emissions; and, by buying them, we, in turn, champion farmers, fishermen, and food producers in our community.

IbizaPreservation launched the Ibiza Produce project in 2018, to create a platform through which the concept of farm-to-table becomes more accessible and connected.

IbizaPreservation’s Project: Marine Forum

The Marine Forum of Ibiza & Formentera was born in 2019 with a vision to create a space for discussion and debate about the environmental future of our islands.

It provides a unique opportunity by uniting public and private sectors with civil society, aiming to stimulate high-level debate and propose a framework for the recovery of our marine environment. This framework is based on three key objectives: reducing discharges of wastewater into the sea, improving the protection of coastal habitats, and eliminating single-use plastics in Ibiza & Formentera.

In February 2021 Prestige Properties joined forces with IbizaPreservation by offering a one-time donation, and from there on committing to donating 50 € for every property sale, and 5 € for every rental deal closed. What to expect for the season of 2021 – Ibiza Travel News Update

Our rentals team at Prestige Properties Ibiza has seen a positive flow and strong enthusiasm for travel this upcoming 2021 season, with many keen clients determined to get their well-deserved summer holidays secured this year – finally!

However, pursuing a dream 2021 vacation still comes with a little apprehension. Naturally, everyone is curious to know what ‘expectations’ they should encounter over the coming months.

So, we’ve put together a little ‘Season 2021’ blog for everybody wishing to travel to Ibiza, with plenty of linked information at your disposal. We want everyone to feel confident that Ibiza hosts many pleasurable lifestyle and travel opportunities, and help you make the most of your 2021 travel.

What do I need to be able to Travel to Ibiza

With most European travel borders now already open, (with the remaining reopening in the coming weeks – the UK particularly has recently announced set plans to allow travel to the Baleares once again, classifying it as a safe holiday destination, with no need to quarantine upon return) we are confidently expecting to see a promising influx of tourism.

Travelling to Ibiza is possible for tourism with a negative PCR test, filling out a simple health form with a QR code on arrival and, naturally, respecting any safety measures and regulations in place.

What are the current COVID-19 measurements and restrictions in Ibiza

Ibiza has been incredibly efficient over the past year, and particularly cautious over the winter season to ensure the health and well-being of everyone. Our restrictions and measurements are regularly reviewed, in which we are currently seeing further de-escalation month after month. You can stay updated with our Covid-19 2021 News here.

The general expectation is that we will see a season similar to that of 2020, whereby everyone is welcome and able to enjoy their holidays with the freedom to move around and experience everything on offer.

All outdoor activities and social events, such as relaxing on beaches, swimming, sporting activities, visiting landmarks, shopping, local markets and hippy markets, and enjoying the restaurants and bars (including the beach clubs) are available, with many seasonal venues already open.

The only main difference compared to pre-Covid-19 seasons, has so far been the closure of our nightclubs and large-scale overcrowded venues, including some hotel events. However, recently the government announced that the summer could hold potentially good news regarding re-opening our world-famous nightclubs. Measurements are expected to be in place, but the overall aim is to have the clubs open with the provision of health passports, declaring full vaccinations as a requirement for entry by July.

What’s on in Ibiza 2021

Many of our visitors from the 2020 season offered great feedback from their last summer vacation. It became quite apparent visitors took more time to explore the great outdoors, developed a special interest in culinary experiences and daytime venues, enjoyed the luxury of private boat days with their friends, simply relaxed, or adventured those less travelled paths, discovering the island’s hidden gems.

Here you will find everything you need to create a fun and memorable holiday itinerary from vintage hippy cars, regular artisan markets, museums, watersports, and everything in between.

During May and June Ibiza has planned to host some great extracurricular activities that can be enjoyed by all. The Balearic Triathlon Federation and Ibiza Blue Challenge are organising the Balearic Duathlon Cross Championship 2021, which is currently open to all competitors internationally. The challenge will be held on Sunday, May 9 at 10:00 in the Can Truy circuits of the town of Santa Eulària, and includes a 3km race, 10km Mountain Bike Race, and a further 1.5km race. From May 7th until 9th our annual Medieval Ibiza Fair is due to return with the focus on outdoor shows running over three days, including theater, medieval music, shows, dance, storytelling, and guided tours of Dalt Vila. All the shows are held in the Reina Sofía Park, and proceeds go to the Red Cross.

During June, many of our small local villages come alive with wonderful annual festivities and daytime markets. Our regular San Juan hippy market has recently returned every Sunday and is bustling with life and vitality, giving a true reflection of the local Ibizan spirit. A fun-filled day of live music, street food, and market stalls with local farmers’ produce, handcrafted artisan gifts, jewelry, healing crystals, Hierbas liqueurs, organic bread, coffee, leather goods, typical bohemian fashion, and plenty of local art.

St. John’s Festivities (Festes de Sant Joan / Fiestas de San Juan), which is the annual village celebration of San Juan village is also due to be held on June 23rd, attracting many visitors to celebrate the famous Flower Power party, and an evening of firecrackers and jumping through bonfires. As our usual Medieval Ibiza Fair is running, we expect this wonderful event will equally take place this year as usual.

The music scene has very much transferred into many great ‘daytime venue parties’. Everything requires a reservation, seated dining, and full table service, but you will be surprised at the up-market and relaxed atmosphere on offer, as some of the island’s DJs have taken on a slightly different element to their career.

Look out for Las Dalias Hippy Market over the weekends for a family-friendly day out. The vibe is as it always was, flowing freely with the authentic Ibiza spirit, and the food is pretty good too!

Alma Eat is Life has also been recognised for its regular live DJ event, "Life is better at the Beach", with a special bespoke BBQ service with quality cuts of meat and inclusive wine. The venue event often features the island famous DJ Andy Baxter and internationally renowned Ida Engberg.

Pikes Hotel is now offering a Brand New Food Concept of a regular brunch with the island’s famous Foodie Influencer – Love Food Ibiza. "Love Food Ibiza at Pikes is a menu designed from Tess’ worldwide culinary experiences, to cover all tastes and food desires. The dishes are predominantly ‘contemporary eclectic’ with Ayurvedic and macrobiotic influence. And, if you are looking for that DJ daytime set, then save for a visit for Sunday’s by the pool, sipping cocktails in the sun, and divulging into the world famous Pikes Sunday Roast as the sublime soundtrack soothes your soul.

For the majority, a vacation means the luxury and enjoyment of Mediterranean evenings with a little al fresco dining of great food and great wine with a little added ‘let your hair down’ late-night events.

Whilst our restaurants are open, curfews are still in place, and venues are allowed outside for seated dining on their terrace spaces until 22.00hs in most cases, with a home curfew at 23.00hs.

Reducing CO2 Emissions – Calculating our Carbon Footprint

Over the past century, it has been estimated that global CO2 emissions have risen from 2 billion tons (recorded 1900) to a staggering 36.5 billion tons (by 2018).

While it’s easy to see a statistic and stay distant from the issue, individuals, businesses, and organizations must collectively acknowledge the significant correlation between our increased Co2 emissions and the devastating effects on planetary climate change.

The fight against climate change requires the active reduction of our energy consumption. Energy efficiency and reducing our carbon emissions is the transition needed to work towards a clean energy future.

Reducing Co2 Emissions in the Workplace

For every company, a chain of energy exists. Businesses and offices produce Co2 emissions and consume energy through the use of natural gas, electricity, heating oil, propane, servers, fleet, employee, and commuter travel.

Businesses can reduce their carbon footprint through several actions that include the usage of renewable energy sources, simply regulating the office thermostat, ensuring all plug sockets are switched off at the end of the day, choosing a laptop instead of a desktop computer, sharing vehicles, recycling, etc.

Calculating our Carbon Footprint

Whilst most businesses may not have the time, knowledge, and resources to spend organizing, planning, and sustaining eco-friendly actions to make a difference to their carbon footprint, there are companies specialised in calculating and providing energy-efficient solutions to help create a more sustainable workplace.

In the latter part of 2020, we calculated our Carbon Footprint: Prestige Properties Ibiza emits approximately 18 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Since actively calculating our carbon footprint, we have now received an official manual for reducing our emissions in the office by changing electrical equipment to newer more efficient versions, changing to more hybrid or fully electric cars, switching off all equipment at the end of the day, and keeping air-con’s systems within reasonable temperature limits.

Off-Setting

Offsetting means funding global projects to reduce carbon emissions elsewhere, to "off-set" the amount of emissions you create. Frequently carbon offsetting reduces emissions much faster than an individual or single company can.

Carbon offsetting projects help to combat global climate change as well as caring for local communities. In many instances they also are known to provide needed employment, health improvement, biodiversity, reforestation and broad social benefits to impoverished communities.

For the future, we are now looking at projects to off-set our footprint, so that we can be a 100% carbon neutral company. So, stay tuned for more information.
