Ibiza Summer Vehicle Access Regulations: What Tourists Need to Know

New Seasonal Vehicle Limits Introduced

Ibiza now enforces strict summer vehicle access rules from 1 June to 30 September each year. These measures, first introduced in 2025, aim to alleviate traffic and promote environmental sustainability.

Bringing Your Own Vehicle: Permit Required

All tourists wishing to bring a vehicle, such as a car or campervan, must obtain a vehicle access pass in advance. Permits cost one euro per day and are available via the official platform Ibiza Circular. This pass links to the vehicle’s registration and is mandatory for disembarking at Ibiza’s port.

Integration with Ferry Bookings

  • Most ferry companies now integrate the permit into the booking process, but if yours does not, you must apply via IbizaCircular.es in advance.
  • Confirmation: Tourists receive a digital certificate or sticker to prove vehicle authorisation.
  • Limited availability: If the quota is full, additional permits will not be issued. Early planning is strongly recommended.

Vehicle Quota Breakdown

  • Rental cars: Up to 16,000 permitted. The local rental fleet cannot expand beyond this number.
  • Private tourist vehicles: Approximately 4,100 spots for cars brought by tourists.
  • Formentera residents: Around 120 permits allocated specifically for these individuals.
  • Motorcycles and mopeds: Exempt from the permit system.

Exemptions

The following categories are exempt from the new permit system:

  • Ibiza residents: Vehicles registered on the island are not subject to limitations.
  • Second homeowners: Permitted one vehicle, with proof of ownership required.
  • Workers from other Balearic Islands: Must provide employment documentation.
  • Essential services and freight: Includes public service, emergency, and delivery vehicles.
  • Disabled travellers: Vehicles serving individuals with reduced mobility.
  • Transit to Formentera: Vehicles using Ibiza as a transit point.

Car Rental Policies

Rental agencies must comply with the 16,000 vehicle limit. Tourists hiring a car do not need to manage permits themselves. Availability could be tight during peak periods, so advance booking is advisable.

Campervan Regulations

Travellers bringing campervans must:

  • Obtain a permit as required for other vehicles.
  • Provide proof of a confirmed camping site reservation.
  • Wild camping is strictly prohibited, and failure to comply may result in denied entry at the port.

Driving Within Ibiza

Once on the island with an authorised vehicle, tourists may drive freely. There are no specific restrictions on road access, but:

  • Parking zones in towns are regulated and may require special passes.
  • Beach access may be limited when parking areas are full.

Enforcement and Penalties

Fines of up to thirty thousand euros may apply for failing to follow the regulations. Oversight will be conducted through ferry controls and on island monitoring. Rental agencies also face sanctions for exceeding their vehicle allocations.

Purpose of the Regulations

These changes respond to growing concerns over traffic congestion, overtourism, and environmental degradation. Ibiza is seeking a more sustainable tourism model by encouraging public transport and environmentally friendly travel methods.

Plan Ahead and Travel Responsibly

Visitors planning to drive in Ibiza this summer should secure a permit in advance via IbizaCircular.es. They are also encouraged to consider alternative transport options such as buses, bicycles or scooters, which provide a more relaxed way to explore the island. Those who do not meet exemption criteria or are unable to obtain a permit should avoid bringing a vehicle altogether.

Ibiza’s efforts aim to balance the island’s natural beauty with its popularity as a top destination. Responsible travel will help preserve the island for years to come.
