Reducing CO2 emissions starts with understanding where your carbon footprint comes from and which actions can make the biggest difference. Over the past century, global emissions have risen dramatically, with fossil-fuel CO2 emissions and industrial activity still at historically high levels.
Reading the statistics is one thing; taking action is another. Individuals, businesses and organisations can reduce their carbon footprint by improving energy efficiency, adopting cleaner power sources and making practical operational changes that support a lower-carbon future.
How Businesses Can Reduce CO₂ Emissions in the Workplace
Businesses contribute to carbon output through electricity, heating, servers, fleet vehicles, and employee travel. Practical steps to reduce the footprint include:
- Using renewable energy sources
- Regulating office thermostats
- Switching off unused equipment
- Choosing laptops over desktops
- Encouraging car-sharing, cycling, or public transport.
çTransitioning company vehicles to hybrid or electric models is also effective, with Spain’s MOVES III programme offering incentives for electric mobility and charging infrastructure.
Local context matters: on islands like Ibiza, the energy mix and grid connections shape sustainable choices. Recent reports highlight the ongoing dependence on fossil fuels and the pressing need to expand local renewable energy sources.

How to Calculate a Company’s Carbon Footprint
A credible carbon plan starts with measuring your emissions. The internationally recognised Greenhouse Gas Protocol is the standard approach, dividing emissions into three categories:
- Scope 1-Direct emissions: from sources you own or control, such as company vehicles or gas heating.
- Scope 2-Indirect emissions from energy: emissions from the electricity, heating, or cooling you purchase.
- Scope 3-Other indirect emissions: includes upstream and downstream activities, such as staff commuting, business travel, and supply chain impacts.
If measuring emissions in-house feels too complex, certified consultants or accredited calculators can provide a clear baseline and highlight where you can make the biggest difference. Many companies now report their emissions annually and set both short- and long-term reduction targets, aligning with national climate goals and, for European businesses, evolving EU rules and reporting standards.
In late 2020 Prestige Properties calculated an annual footprint of approximately 18 tonnes CO₂. Since then we have applied the recommendations from our audit: equipment upgrades, more efficient office practices, and a transition plan for company vehicles toward hybrid / electric models.
Practical Ways to Reduce Carbon Emissions in Businesses and Offices
Here are priority steps that typically deliver fast, cost-effective reductions:
- Fix the basics: eliminate standby waste (power strips, auto-shutdown), adjust thermostats by 1–2°C, and schedule regular HVAC servicing.
- Low-cost upgrades: LED lighting, smart controls, and insulation deliver quick paybacks.
- Medium investments: heat pumps for heating/cooling, PV panels and battery storage, workplace EV chargers.
- Operational change: encourage public transport, staggered commuting, remote working and fleet renewal plans.
- Procurement & suppliers: ask suppliers for environmental data and prefer lower-carbon options.
Carbon Offsetting: How Companies Can Offset Their CO₂ Emissions
Carbon offsetting means supporting initiatives that cut emissions in other locations. These projects frequently contribute to reforestation, biodiversity, local community development, and public health improvements. We are currently exploring suitable programmes to reach full carbon neutrality in the future. When selecting offsets:
- Prefer high-quality, transparent standards, such as Gold Standard or Verra’s VCS.
- Choose projects with clear, measurable outcomes, reforestation, verified renewable initiatives, avoided deforestation, and meaningful benefits for local communities.
- Use offsets only to cover residual emissions, after implementing all feasible reductions.
Well-designed offset projects can support social and biodiversity objectives alongside climate mitigation, but careful due diligence is essential.

EU Climate Policy and Carbon Reporting Rules Businesses Should Know
Regulation and corporate expectations have moved quickly. The EU continues to tighten building and reporting rules as part of the Green Deal: revised building directives and other packages are raising renovation ambition and reporting expectations for companies operating in Europe. Meanwhile, Member States (including Spain) offer schemes and incentives to accelerate electrification and energy upgrades. Businesses should track these changes; compliance, grants and tax incentives can alter the economics of retrofits and fleet renewal.
Separately, the EU has recently committed to even more ambitious long-term targets, a reminder that policy and market pressures for decarbonisation will continue to rise.

Prestige Properties Ibiza’s Carbon Reduction Actions
In late 2020, Prestige Properties Ibiza calculated its annual carbon footprint at approximately 18 tonnes of CO₂. Since then, the company has implemented several of the recommendations from its audit, including more efficient office practices, equipment improvements and changes to company transport.
Today, Prestige Properties operates a company fleet made up entirely of hybrid vehicles. Prestige Properties Ibiza is now a 100% carbon-neutral company and has been offsetting its residual emissions for the past 3.5 years.
These actions form part of Prestige Properties’ wider commitment to continuous improvement, more responsible business practices and transparent environmental progress. We will continue to monitor our impact, review our operational choices and update our actions as new opportunities, technologies and regulations evolve.
